Connecting flights in South Africa – where to go

When travelling to South Africa, you’ll fly into either Cape Town or Johannesburg. These are both great places to visit, and make an excellent base for your holiday. Some of Cape Town’s most popular tourist destinations include Kirstenbosch, Table Mountain and Robben Island, while great places to visit in Johannesburg include Gold Reef City and Soweto as well as its many markets, theatres and restaurants. However, you shouldn’t overlook some of South Africa’s other lesser-known destinations. South Africa has an excellent domestic air travel network, with connecting flights available to most of the larger cities. It’s cheap and easy to get flights to almost anywhere in the country, allowing you to explore everything South Africa has to offer.

Located amid the hills and forests of the Natal-Midlands, Pietermaritzburg is a colourful city perfect if you like to explore the great outdoors at a leisurely pace. The town is home to the beautiful National Botanic Gardens, and a charming historic centre that’s best seen on foot by following the series of ‘Town Trails’ tours. If you’re staying in Johannesburg and fancy a trip to the coast, Pietermaritzburg is a great place to stop on the way. Flights are available from O.R. Tambo International with domestic carrier Airlink.

Located in the centre of the country, Bloemfontein is a fantastic place to visit if you want to experience some old-fashioned South African hospitality. The city’s inhabitants have a laid-back, friendly attitude, but certainly aren’t lacking in energy when they want to have fun. You’ll find lots of sporting activities here, including quad-biking, tennis, hiking and cycling. Bloemfontein also boasts some beautiful natural surroundings – the views from Naval Hill, the gorgeous Botanical Gardens and the scenery of Golden Gate National Park are not to be missed. Flights to Bloemfontein are available from O.R. Tambo and Cape Town International, with carriers South African Express or Mango.

For a taste of South Africa’s culture, there’s no better place to visit than Polokwane in Limpopo. With Polokwane Game Reserve and Kruger National Park in close proximity, the city is a great place to stay if you want to experience South Africa’s beautiful wildlife. The Polokwane Art Musuem is home to indoor and outdoor exhibits that showcase some of South Africa’s best artists, while the nearby Hugh Exton Photographic Museum offers a fascinating insight into over 100 years of the country’s history. And if you fancy something more energetic, the mountains surrounding the city are excellent for hiking, horse riding and mountain biking.
