Italy
Italy is one of those countries that really does have something for everyone. Whether you want to relax and enjoy the peace of the countryside, explore one of its exciting cities, or indeed just chill out with a good book on a golden beach, this country has it all. This is the land of the Roman Empire, the birth place of modern Christianity, and home to some of the most delicious cuisine on the face of the planet. Few can resist the charms of this beautiful country, all infused with the Latin passion which is the hallmark of the Italian culture.
Many Italian cities can be quite busy as they are incredibly popular with tourists, but although this can make for a fairly hectic experience, the beauty, atmosphere and culture make a trip more than worthwhile. Venice is a favourite with couples looking for a romantic break, with its sprawling plazas, sumptuous architecture and gondola-laden canals. Fashionistas and shopaholics will be right at home in Milan, while anyone with a passion for Roman art and history will enjoy the capital of Rome, and its neighbouring Catholic city-state, Vatican City.
As well as enchanting cities, Italy also boasts some of the most attractive natural landscapes in Europe. The Italian Lake District is one of the most beautiful parts of the country and with the likes of Milan, Bergamo and Verona only an hour or so away, it’s ideal if you want a relaxing break with the option of shopping and exciting nightlife not too far away. If a countryside holiday holds more appeal, a villa in Tuscany is an idyllic hideaway and offers the chance to experience the more rustic side of Italian cuisine. As the country is practically one huge peninsula into the Mediterranean Sea, Italy also offers no shortage of destinations for a scorching beach holiday. Some of the best can be found on the islands of Sicily and Sardinia, or the mainland resorts of Rimini and Pescara.
Wherever you choose to visit, if you’re a foodie, you’ll be in absolute heaven. Though they’re popular everywhere, there’s so much more to Italian food than pizza and pasta, and after one mouthful of either, you’ll quickly realise how poorly they’re imitated abroad. The Italians are experts at balancing rich flavours, and the use of locally-sourced olive oil, wines and cheeses play an important part in their food preparation. They also love their coffee, particularly espresso, which has now become a huge part of their cultural identity.
It’s practically impossible to holiday in Italy and not fall in love with it. If the physical beauty of the country’s landscapes and cities doesn’t get you, the culture or the cuisine surely will. If you’re visiting for the first time – prepare to be hooked for life.
